Ahiflower oil is a nutrient-rich oil that is extracted from the seeds of the ahiflower plant (Buglossoides arvensis), a hedgerow plant that belongs to the Boraginaceae family. Once considered a weed in Europe and several countries in Asia, this herb is now grown sustainably as an agricultural crop valued for its remarkable oil and nutritional content.

The ahiflower plant gets its name from its high content of omega-3 fatty acids, which is comparable to the oils from fatty fish, such as the ahi tuna. In fact, it is considered to be the richest non-fish source of omega fatty acids on the planet. Two of the most important and common types of omega-3 fatty acids are docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). While these fatty acids are more commonly found in fish sources, ahiflower oil contains stearidonic acid (SDA), which is also more readily and more efficiently converted into DHA and EPA than oils sourced from plants such as flax, chia, hemp, perilla, sancha inchi and echium.
